My dad has one of these and it's a really really nice guitar.

He doesn't care about Chet Atkins in the slightest but bought it because it looks and sounds cool. Which it does.

So why not get the inspiration to create a product that reproduces that sound. Is that "signature"?
In my opinion that is the highest appreciation someone may get for his own music: inspiration spread for creative processes.

So, this I get BUT why do all the bands have to be super fucking lame?

There have been some awesome ones by Fuzzrocious, Dwarfcraft, SS/BS (all his special release pedals) and DBA (except the Flaming Lips cause that shit is whack sorry ILF).

Like why can't anyone make a pedal based on Kid Koala...wait. EQD did that and I have it.

Depends on the band and brand, man. The Fuzzrocius Daughters pedal gives me a boner, and I love my Squier J Mascis. Hell, even something like the Black Math is essentially supposed to be Jack White in a box.

Basically, if its something I might like I'll probably get it. Same logic I use for all my gear gets.

As far as Ryan Adams goes, I tried to listen to his shit before all the allegations came out and was immediately bored. I just don't get it. Now that it seems hes been outted as a creep, I have no problem with telling him to go fuck himself, but I honestly done care enough to put in the effort.

Didn't care before, don't care now.

as soon as i heard he was pitching fits and walking off cos people jokingly yelled for "Summer of '69" i immediately wrote him off as a precious little jerk. if he'd taught his band a verse and chorus and knocked it out con brio with a shout of "be careful what you ask for..." it would have been a brilliant retort with a clear sense of humor. when i heard that he actually tried to pull his shenanigans with Liz Phair i was like "little worm does what?"

He seems like a complete twat but I read about that Bryan Adams incident and it was from him playing a quiet solo acoustic gig at some small venue and some drunk guy kept screaming at him to play Bryan Adams...so telling some drunk retard to fuck off isn't unwarranted. I think he does/did humor the crowd occasionally and play summer of '69 at shows.

from what i saw there was a series of incidents where people trolled him. i'm not sure if it was because it was such an obvious joke or because whatever you called Troll Nation a decade ago latched onto the meme...i always figured the former. i mean, if you were named Len Skinner wouldn't you have to expect "FREE BIRD!!!!!!!!!!!!"?

I almost purchased the JHS VCR when it was released, but at the time, my reservations were with JHS. I had a genuine love affair with Ryan Adams’ music. Rock’n’Roll was a jubilant, heart-breaking album, full of these amazing guitar sounds and little lyrical flourishes. I have a hard time thinking of another album that more perfectly sounds like falling in love. His follow-up, Love Is Hell was on constant rotation in my household when the Japanese import dropped. It was also the end of my fandom of his music. There were too many unnecessary cover tunes and the whole thing felt pretentious. I saw his first concert after breaking his hand. He played for 4 hours until the venue literally turned off the power. I broke my foot at that show.

Now, he goes in a box of memories with Michael Jackson and all of the other artists who have fallen from grace. I still won’t buy a JHS pedal.

What makes you choose the band or people you do this for?
First of all, I have to like the band and/or the band's music.
Second, I have to discuss with the band that if we made something together, is there a market/would it sell. Can it sell more than 15-20? Any band can have a pedal made for them, but if you can only make and sell five, the price will be insane. The more you can make, the better you can make pricing over time.
If the band only wants to do a small run and be done, that is cool too, but there is a lot of planning in this and price will be reflective of such a small run so everyone can make some type of profit.

Is it a personal preference thing of what type of music you dig?
Sometimes.

Is it a marketing gimmick based on how super popular they are?
All marketing is some kind of gimmick. You're advertising a thing a certain way to attract a certain buyer pool.
Define super popular.

Thanks for the answers! Was hoping for builders to chime in!

I guess super popular would be someone like Ryan Adams. He's the most popular dude I've seen used by non enormous companies (then again, maybe those companies are bigger than I think). So, I guess I'm always interest in what metrics drive builders to do one signature over another.

People say he's popular, but who is he? What bands has he been in? Who is he popular with? I've literally only ever heard of him within the context of signature gear. Is he actually a popular musician, or is he just a figment of the imaginations of gear companies? I feel like I've stumbled into a parallel universe in the last year or two, because they don't have a Ryan Adams in my timeline.

His music is certainly relatively popular, it's been used in movies and despite being too young for it I believe Gold and some other stuff got a lot of play when it came out.

But I followed his music for years (and am super disappointed by the recent revelations), and while I'm aware he's popular and far from being underground, I was confused when he started getting signature gear, because to me none of his musical appeal was ever about the guitar playing or sound (which is what I traditionally assume is needed to sell signature pedals - guitars not so much) at all. Perhaps we are just out of touch though. :idk:
