I agree with you to a certain extend, but I have noticed a huge influx of things being pushed at us on almost all platforms. I guess it depends on what you find absurd. For instance, I find it quite absurd that I cannot read a news story (on almost any site anymore) without having ads about random stuff smashed into my face. The forums have gotten bad too. ILF is great because it's stuck a few decades behind in software (LOL), so we don't have that issue as much. If you look at some of the bigger forums though, there's ads almost everywhere. At least the ones I use.

I know you're probably not specifically talking about ads though. It's just the most obnoxious thing that comes to mind for me when surfing the net. Especially since ISP will be able to shove them at you whenever they want, however they want now.






I feel like the internet can be a golden wealth of knowledge at times. As a property manager, it has saved my ass countless times to be able to google something on the fly and be able to figure it out.

For instance, I was running an auger recently to clean out a drain line. I've never done that before and had no idea what I was doing. It seems straight forward right? It does take a certain level of skill though. I googled it, and a site told me what heads to use with the auger, in which order and how fast/slow I ought to take things. I had no idea. I have no plumbing experience, but I learned something and it saved me a few hundred bucks. So right there, it help a ton.

I've done the same thing on many occasions.

I think for the most part you have to take what you want and leave the rest. Then the internet is magical.

Interesting points; consider the Crocodile; it predates dinosaurs and survives today; it has seen the rise and fall of multiple animal species which, theoretically, should have been an upgrade to crocs and should have out-competed the crocs, not so. Sometimes old technologies, by the virtue of their rhobust design, can overcome shocks which more complicated designs cannot handle. And they cost less. The AK47 is another example. Effectively designed in '47 but still the most popular war rifle today. And cheap. I wonder if many features/promises of the net aren't being overbuilt to the point of diminishing returns? Should more money/resources be diverted to areas other than shoving more info down people's throats?

Yall ever experienced I guess being so at one with your device that while listening to something, researching whatever, communicating threw it, you reach out to find it...but its right there in front of you being used ...as if you were searching for another phone/tablet/whatever (where's my sunglasses) type deal "their on your head"

Ancient men assigned human characteristics to inanimate objects (rocks) as well as animals (Aztec jaguar-men/Egyptian dog-faced gods). This is called anthropomorphism. Now that we are so removed from nature we need to assign human characteristics to new things - computers. This needs a new term:

technological anthropomorphism

The whole singularity movement is another iteration of man assigning human characteristics to inanimate objects. In 20-30 years people will look back at the transhuman/singularity idea as ridiculous but will have adopted an equally ridiculous idea that will be inevitable in 10-20 years. This development has been more democratic than any other information revolution in history, with fewer barriers to entry, too. Our addiction to devices is pretty different, I think, than our addiction to information, which has been pretty persistent throughout the life of letters and speech.

Having access to the equivalent of the Library at Alexandria while on the toilet means that our inability to look at stuff besides ILF, porn, and cat memes is totally on us. There’s some crazy shit out there—MOOCs, instructional videos for everything...it’s literally a repository for the history of human knowledge whose only problem is that there’s zero regulatory apparatus. And very few individuals have one hard-wired in.

Anyway, no. I think we’ll keep generating stuff. But the control surfaces and ways that we can look at massive data sets are going to shift. The Internet of Things is gonna pick up a little more steam, too.

I don’t disagree with you. Folks have volunteered to consume “garbage data” ... no conspiracy needed; it’s much like food; people today have more access to food than at any time in history (at least in the “developed” world) and this great glory has now contributed to the average life span to fall two years in a row; folks are eating themselves to death ... there’s that pesky diminishing returns; note that the internet/information is not bad but information, like food, has diminishing returns where more is not better ...
