Some seriously hott bikes in here. I'm dialing in my family of bikes today (mine, the Mrs, and the kid bike). I'm stoked to get back in the saddle and smash around town. Need to snag a new helmet and roadside pump because I can't find my old ones...

Folding bikes. Might look into one for quick commuting/traveling/leaving somewhere else. Want to keep the extravagance affordable. What should I look for? Specific models you guys would recommend? I'm 6 feet tall, or 185 centimeters for you euros.

I had a folding bike. It was when I lived on the top floor of a three floor walk up and wanted something I could carry up the stairs. (The stairs were really steep too. It was like climbing a mountain.) The folding aspect worked well enough for me as far as navigating the stairs, but the folding mechanism added more weight than I would've liked. So, I got rid of it.

When I first started looking for a folder, I was gonna get an old one like a Raleigh Twenty. Took one for a spin and really didn't like the way it handled. :idk:

I ended up with a Dahon Speed d7 and swapped out the handlebars for better handling. It came with flat bars and I got some that swept back a bit.

If I could've afforded it, probably would've gone w/ a Brompton. :snax: The only thing I didn't really like about the Brompton was the tiny wheels.

That's what I've got for ya. ;)

That's cool. Had already spotted the old used raleighs and the Dahons.

The Dahon was solid enough. I'd recommend considering one. It's just that I really didn't need a folder. My primary concern was wheel clearance when goin' up and down stairs.

I recently got a little BMX bike and I'm pretty happy with that for makin' short trips around town. Obviously, that's not gonna work for you for commuting.

Yeah folding so it works as luggage is part of it. The Dahon I've spotted is a bit pricey (a little over 500€) and I was hoping to find a cheap solution as I'm not gonna use it as a main bike for a short period (probably 6 months).

There's a local builder here who does this:

http://www.bilenky.com/retrofits

If I needed a bike that breaks down, that's the route I'd go. Obviously, you're probably not gonna ship your frame over here for that, but maybe there's a European builder who does something similar. In fact, I just looked and found this list: http://www.sandsmachine.com/fbplist.htm#Foreign
