Yazzer. India Pale Ales are called THAT because when they were exported from India way back like a looooong time ago, a ton of hops were added to preserve the beer over the long journey to wherevers, like Britain. And then when the beer got there peeps tasted it and they were like DAMN SHIT'S GOOD!

So that is the style. Some IPAs are overly hoppy, which I guess I like, but there is nothing better than one that has a good balance of hops and malts and all that shit. I don't know what that MEANS really, but the best one forever overall and for goodness is

BELL'S TWO HEARTED

that I listed above.

If an IPA is too hoppy for you but you somewhat enjoy the taste, try a regular Pale Ale. Like the Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. Good place to start. Hop flavor, but without the biting hop bitterness. Also, English India Pale Ales are less hoppy than American India Pale Ales. Huh? Beers of the IPA type that are brewed in America are way hoppier. Hooray. For a basic English IPA, try a St. Peter's.

Otherwise my other favourite is the BUTTHOLE SUPREME

If I do drink(which I seldom do) my taste in beer goes something like this:
Bud Light if I'm drinking whiskey. Always,to cut costs.
Blue Moon in the summer, bottle, because beer on tap,IMO is far too bubbly and I don't mix beer and fruit.
Newcastle and Honey Brown are my Fall Beers
Sammy Smith's Oatmeal Stout,Guinness,Black and Tans,Boddington's in the Winter
and my Spring Beers are a local brew called Red Jacket and Sam Adams Cherry Wheat

Y'know..even though I don't drink..i still find this thread fascinating.
I guess I'm a bit of an armchair foodie, so it's cool to hear about all the many variations on the 'beer' theme that are available. :p

Oh, you wouldn't believe. People who aren't into craft beer are often shocked to hear how much variation there is.

The last BJCP guidelines that came out list 78 defined subcategories of beer, plus a miscellany category.

EDIT::: sorry, BJCP is "Beer Judge Certification Program". They're basically the "authority" when it comes to defining styles of beer.

On Friday I get to go here:

It's becoming a tradition when I go home (to upstate NY) to drop by there on the way back from the airport.

:joy:

Not sure what I will be picking up as of yet, but it's a nice store to browse around in to say the least.

:yay:

Oooh - niiiiiiiiiiice! Beers of the World sounds awesome.

On the beer tip, I tried the Ten Fidy Imperial Stout from Oskar Blues this past week, and was not disappointed. You want dark beer? HERE'S a dark damn beer! So yummy... and there's two more in the fridge, just taunting me. I can hear them calling...

BOTW is truly amazing.

I look at those damn Oskar cans every time I'm at the store.

I have yet to shell out the $10 for a sixer even though I hear good things. Hrrmmm.

Yeah, it seems like a lot, but I can only handle one can of those a night because of the higher alcohol content (and because I'm a "cheap date" aka wuss), and the fact that they are HEAVY AS HELL so they usually last me long enough.

They are 100% delicious. I consider it a worthy investment.

My favorite is Rogue Dead Guy Ale. Can't get enough of that stuff. They also have a Double Dead Guy, which is equally as impressive. But that one usually puts me on the floor after one glass.

You'd think I'd be more of a Bell's fan given my location, but I'm not a big fan of Oberon. They have a lot of other great stuff that I enjoy though (they have a seasonal called "Hell Hath No Fury" which is AWESOME), that you can get only at their Eccentric Cafe.

For a bigger better beer thread!

I have about one beer a week tops...BUT, I'm still digging Blue Moon (Pale Moon), and Buffalo Bill's Orange Blossom Cream Ale.
