Found some old, ugly wood...must telecaster

Postby GuitarSlim101 » Mon May 09, 2016 6:14 pm

I was digging through a pile of shelves, paneling, various cutoffs, and other assorted bits of wood in the basement of my store, and found an old 4x4 that just happened to be long enough to make a tele. I have a maple tele neck sitting around, so this should be a worthy project.

It's either fir or redwood, won't know for sure until I get it cleaned up and thinned down. Certainly smells like redwood.

Mmmhmm, it has some lovely knots and imperfections. Yay.

It's pleasantly sweet, with a hint of evergreen and a touch of Lincoln logs.

Also boner.

Definitely following this one! Working on a Tele right now too, made from a chopped out chunk of old gym flooring or bleachers or something.

Progress. Got the chunks jointed and glued last night, cut out the rough shape, planed it down to almost final thickness, and filled some knots and cracks today.

Been a busy couple of days with customer repairs, so no new progress to show. I've just been taking the edges in to proper dimension. Beginning to lean back towards fir again, too, but I'm still not sure. If I have some spare time tomorrow, I want to get the neck pocket, pickups, and electronic cavity routed, but I have some family stuff to do, so we'll see.

Got it routed. It wanted to splinter like crazy, so the bulk of the work was done with a chisel, then I cleaned it up with the router.
