So yeah what guitar speakers are you guys into? I want something loud and harsh, glassy, icepicky, whatever the old folks hate! If I could I would JBL but since Lodewijk and company used em I guess it is treble that is ok for rock 'n roll guys! Asked on thee gore page since they love accurate shit but they just expect you to blow 400 bucks + import tax on a single speaker so NOPE! Also kinda worried i would say uck there

So what fucking speakers should I get? I drive a sedan btw so I couldnt a sexy peavey 215 in it even if it's a vovlo (the peavey of cars?)

I went through a bunch of stuff years ago and ended up with something from WGS in the 2x12 cabs that I use. It was around 10 years ago, and I can't remember the model. I think I have two different models, but they don't sound that different. They weren't too expensive at the time.

Nice! had not heard about thosebut seem pretty fair priced over here too. How are they voiced? Imo most speakers feel like they sound more middy the more you push them which is bad cause i dont wanna soung like angus steak

Actually I feel like I really dont know much at all about speaker parameters. I'm right thinking that 40watters with a 100watt amp will have tons of breakup and high end stuff and a 300 watter with the same amp will sound like a limp dick?

Also how cautious do I gotta be with speaker mis-matching really? I am mostly relating this to looking at impedance/frequency graphs and there is always a huge spike in the lows and I feel if this parameter is different enough it could be dangerous, no?

the current Eminence speakers are pretty high-efficiency & in-your-face. the Wizard is the loudest speaker i have personally ever used.

I have an Eminence Tonkerlite in a 1x12" combo that I am super happy with. It's very efficient (aka loud), pretty bright to me, and also only 4lbs. You can get them for $95 shipped in the US which is nice for a 125W speaker. However I am a big fan of 2x10 cabs and Eminence speakers.

Speaker mis-matching really depends on the amp design itself. Generally speaking you can get away with a higher impedance speaker if need be but going lower will more likely than not be risky depending on the amps design. It will effect your "tone" quite a bit.

The speaker wattage rating really doesn't necessarily impact the sound, it's how they happen to build said speaker to deal with said higher power that does. The overall volume you are playing at also makes a difference, if you usually play fairly quiet you can probably get away with lower wattage speakers than the amp claims to be (that might "break up" more) if you want.

If you are playing a SS amp at max distortion/clipping you will probably square wave speakers to death regardless.

I dont mean mis matching the impedance between transformer and speaker, i mean mis matching two different speaker designs.

In the case of guitar though isn't handling generally kinda important to the sound? I mean most people want break up from their speaker so matching speaker to how loud you play would be a good idea, no? I am mostly asking about this cause I have found a JBL E120 (a silly 300w) at an ok price from a better-than-guitarists environment. I play a v4 (~100w) and I am worried it would sound underwhelming compared to something that is more in the 100w range or maybe half that. I do have a more powerful amp that could wreck and cone but I like the 6l6 output stage.

It really depends on the individual speaker's construction. It's hard to quantitate these things. I know of lots people who like mismatching speakers in cabs for their different tonal responses. I've done it before in 2x10 and 2x12s but mostly cause I am cheap and buy whatever decent used speakers I find.

The wattage rating of a speaker doesn't by itself mean anything sound/tone wise. It could be correlated to differences (generalizations) based on heavier duty materials being used in higher wattage speakers (but not necessarily). If the speakers have wildly different sensitivity/SPL ratings one may sound somewhat louder or quieter but I doubt you would notice much in a live setting, and it might even be a good thing. There's no widely used standard test procedures for alot of these parameters. Each company does their own thing so comparing published specs between brands can be hard or even meaningless. You really have to experiment yourself.

I used to see this band Arab on Radar and one of their guitarists used PA cabs w/ horns for his guitar cabs. Not normal but it played into their sound.

arab on radar are sick! i think running horns would be excessive for me though. at least not worth the effort

Arab On Radar didn't use horns, per se, but piezo tweeter arrays, like the thing at the link, but bigger. I think they had 12 piezos per array. The one guitar player, Steve, continued to use them in Athletic Automaton, Doomsday Student. It made for a crispy sound.
