Pladask Elektrisk Ekko Delay

Postby moid » Wed Jun 15, 2016 6:40 pm

Hello everyone

Just for once I'm going to confuse Crochambeau and Eatyourguitar by posting a vero layout that actually works! Knutolai from Pladask Elektrisk posted a schematic of a pedal he designed on DIYStompboxes in January so other people who enjoyed damaged, distorted, cracklepop delays could build their own. I attempted to make a vero layout of it and after a lot of excellent help from duck_arse and knutolai have finally got the circuit working :) I modified the original design to add an unclean blend knob - using it will remove all the delays from the effect but leave the harsh crackle and pop sounds the pedal generates alongside your dry guitar, and I also made it true bypass.

The original thread with Knutolai's schematic is here: http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=112920.0

Actually don't build this yet; mine has just died on me :(... I think I might rebuild this circuit on breadboard to see if I can change parts of it to make some sounds I want. If I ever manage to resurrect things I'll post them here.

Well, at least it worked for a little while. You'll get it working again. Seems like an interesting pedal.

How much heat is that 7805 shedding? I don't off-hand know what the standard draw of a 2399 is, but if that 5 volt regulator is over taxed it could be an early failure point.

Pure speculation, of course. I don't mind looking at strips, I just don't like doing circuit analysis in that grid if that makes any sense.
I've got to get off my ass and bring to reality that what has been quoted through existence.

Thanks - I thought things were going suspiciously well for me when I got it working! I heard enough to know that I want to try to modify parts of it - I really want to get just the delays from the pedal as an output (no original dry guitar sound) and from looking at PT2399 chips apparently pin 14 might be an output of just the wet sound (I hope)... I also want to bias the damage a bit - only about a third of the feedback pot was useful - after that all it did was create crackling popping noise (which is fun, but I like some signal with my noise).

Good question! I don't know, it didn't occur to me to stick my fingers on the circuit while I was playing it. I think PT2399s are supposed to only use 5 volts, but I think (might be wrong) that Ezhi and Aka use them at 6 volts which sometimes switches the pedals off but does create weird delay effects I guess? Hmm so maybe too much power = pT2399 shutdown? Or would too little power do the same thing? Hmmm I do have a separate starve simple starve circuit I could try to limit the incoming power with to see if that helps or not. If you want to see the schematic I'll paste it below:

I'm not going to be able to look at this until next weekend; we had a flood last week and I'm still cleaning up the mess from that and have to be at work all next week, but as soon as I can get my tools out again I'll post some progress.

I have built this pedal.
I was part of the workshop Knutolai designed it for.
It sounds really cool. Both as regular delay and crazy noisemaker.

I'm jealous, that must've been a fantastic workshop. I'm going to try to build it on breadboard to get it working then try again on vero - just out of interest was yours built on PCB or vero? I'm wondering if Knutolai built them on PCB then maybe he might have one left over that he'd sell?

Thanks Ognoy :) - OK I might ask about the PCB then.

I managed to build this on breadboard tonight and found two mistakes in my vero layout, so perhaps those caused the issues - they were capacitors in the wrong place connected to the 78L05. The breadboard version works, but the volume is very low while there is a very loud constant hum... is that normal for breadboard? I think I want to keep my blend pot from the vero but also make the repeats much louder so I may try to squeeze a boost in somewhere to add volume to the repeats.

Happy Day :)
With the help of some nice people at DIYStompboxes I've now made a working version of this circuit so if you want to make a wonderfully distorted delay pedal, this could be for you. I'll try to make a demo of it as soon as it gets boxed. I even learned how to draw a schematic as well, so both versions are below. Please disregard any previous circuit images in this thread; they all have mistakes in them. This version has two extra pots and an extra switch - one to add in louder repeats (even to become a wet only repeats delay at full sweep) , another to reduce bass volume (I never thought I'd think that bass feedback / rumble cold be too loud, but there you go) and a switch to let you choose between three slightly different delay sounds - from bright and fairly clear to soft and muffled.

It's about 15-20mA and the 78L05 is rated for max of 100mA. You could easily run two 2399s off one regulator.

However, I did get a shitty batch of regulators from Tayda awhile back, and they failed very consistently. Drove me nuts. I thought all my 2399s were bad or maybe that all three circuits I was testing had errors. So I get my regulators from Smallbear these days.

Hi everyone, I finally got round to making a demo of my modified version of this pedal. Thanks to my son for playing the guitar :)

hmmm damned if I can work out why the video doesn't show in the post though? The link should work...

Yeah, just remove the "s" and put it in the YouTube tags and you're all set.
