Instant Tape processing simulator DIY pedal (BoC in a box)

Postby Glace_Noire » Wed Aug 19, 2015 10:35 am

I'm thinking to build a real time tape processing emulation pedal.
I'm actually dont talk about a tape delay, just instant tape processing
I have in mind Zvex Instant LoFi Junky or Strymon Deco. A combination of chorus, compression and pitch vibrato I guess but subtle.
I know the Runoffgroove Tri vibe project to do the vibrato part but do you guys know a circuit that can emulate all the tape processing in-a-box or some circuits that I could combine to achieve it? (Think instant Boards of Canada ;) )

Something on vero or stripboard is prefered :)

Start with the clari-not, and play around with feeding in a variety of LFOs for the modulation, instead of the clari-not's envelope follower.

add to that a blendable noise source. ;ots of noise circuits around, mainly involving transistors with one free pin. and filters

Hey I'm working on this right now. I'm thinking of doing this on the spin but using two analog lfos to modulate pitch. One will be fast and one will be slow like wow and flutter. Also will have some light bitcrushing and a low pass filter. Been wanting to do this for a long time and may have to put this on the back burner for a while with school starting

I think this is the way to do it.
A cassette is basically a small vibrato like Boss VB2 and a slight chorus.

I actually do this kind of effects with my Strymon El Capistan.
If you set the effect in "full wet" mode (no bypass signal), with a really, really short delay time, you can play with almost no latency with this tape feeling.
It is great to end up or start songs !

Thanks for the tips guys!

I was thinking about using a clari(not) circuit to start, but I am a little worried about the final result: does the clari(not) sounds more like a tape delay or you could use it much more like an "instant tape processing" feel with the delay knob set very low?
Is the clari(not) could be subtle or it will be warped tape all over the place?
Is it the PT2399 in the clari who does the "tape feel"?

It seems that the clari been modded with a lfo somewhere on this page: http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=74294.220
Is this LFO will do what Cloudscapes and Teej have in mind?
I guess the LFO should do sinewaves, because from what I've heard on zvex lofi junky demos this is the most tape like?

Like benoi31 said, should a chorus mixed with a subtle vibrato not be easier to do, with more a "realistic" tape feel?

So much questions in my mind already
That's actually uber cool that I'm not alone on this project

Project update: I decided to make a "bigger than life multiple tape-like effect" including a chorus, a vibrato and an LFO controlled Clari(not) circuit in a single enclosure. All wired with multiple DPDT for different effect configurations.
Chorus and vibe for the "tape ambience" and the fuzz lifted clari(not) for the warped tape effect
I might also include a low pass filter :excellent:

I did a 3D integration in a 1590xx enclosure:

Next step is circuits layout in Fritzing

I'm gonna be honest with you but what you're planning on building doesn't really sound like what you want. I think to do this analog you're going to want one vibrato circuit with multiple lfos controlling each others depths and speeds. This sounds more like a modulation multi effect

Add a lowpass/highpass filter, that's where I'd go for a lo-fi sound.
