I'm repairing some Big Muffs

Postby xrleroyx » Mon Jan 19, 2015 12:23 pm

I've had some issues with my muffs.

My vintage op amp muffs switch has basically gone. It was modded to true bypass, and there were some switch issues, now it doesn't work.

Russian black box: the jacks are garbage and I want to solder in new ones.

NYC: Again, switch is garbage and it won't turn on.

What parts do I need? Google has not been especially helpful.

(2) 3pdt stomp switches, (1) mono 1/4" jack, (1) stereo 1/4" jack

Wouldn't DPDT switches suffice? I don't think either Muff has an LED, does it?

Of course. While we're at it, 2 mono jacks can be used instead of the mono/stereo. Just figured some updates might be in order :idk:

Something worth noting...might want to make the the jacks the enclosed kind with solder terminals. Pretty sure the pcbs are mounted to the jacks in the Sovtek muffs.

- 3PDT Footswitch. You might not need all three poles, but they are typically the cheapest while being robust. I would avoid the "X wing" style 2PDT switches....

Russian black box: the jacks are garbage and I want to solder in new ones.

- These use stereo (3 sets of lugs) switched PCB mounted plastic jacks. You need the stereo switch at least on the input side to complete the connection for the battery (if used)

NYC: Again, switch is garbage and it won't turn on.

- as above, 3PDT switch.

What parts do I need? Google has not been especially helpful.

For the footswitches:

For the jacks:

I chose BLMS as its a US site and is cheap, and will be quicker than other suppliers I imagine if you are in the continental US

IF you need more advice just ask

Awesome!

Just one last thing real quick:

Where do I assign the mono and stereo?

Is mono input and stereo output?

the input and output jacks on russian big muffs are BOTH stereo ie they have a tip ring and sleeve lugs (3 sets of pins) on each side

it should be clear when you take it apart

so just use the same for both

here is a stock image, russian boards varied

Cool. The jacks that were in that muff kind of shattered.

yeah the plastic is brittle and cheap. Just get some standard replacements.
I recommend just cutting where the old ones were soldered in and then sucking the rest of the "leg" out after rather than trying to shimmy the whole thing out intact.

good luck, YMMV

Hadn't even though of that. Good call, that seems like it'd be a bitch.

Could I get this jack: http://www.bitcheslovemyswitches.com/#! ... ry=5027593

And some longer wire for me to switch the inputs and outputs?

I wouldnt recommend it because the PCB in those pedals is (in part) suspended and secured by the jacks to the case--- hence they tend to fail.
Also keeps it more original incase you ever sell it.

Thanks! I'll have to wait until the PCB mount is back in stock then. Seems really inexpensive and useful. I think I'm going to upgrade the electronics in my less expensive models.

Yo. I have a 78 op amp as well. Same deal. Footswitch pooched bypass mod is fairly easy. 3pdt and reroute some wires. I'll take a picture of mine how I wired it if you're interested.

Mine works great!
