Tempered Steel Enclosure UPDATE WITH KNOBS!

Postby chuckjaywalk » Sun Jan 11, 2015 12:54 pm

I made a tempered steel enclosure this morning, but I can't tell if it is cool or not. Yay or nay?

Hard to tell from that photo but IMO anything that isn't a generic aluminium cuboid has to be cool - and I'm happy to apply that rule to the rest of the things that constitute the Universe.

Goats? Cool
Armpits? Cool
Mattresses? Cool
Hammond 1590b enclosures? Boring and not cool.

Totally drillable. I'm going to do internal welds on the seams, so it will be clean, but industrial. Definitely not a plain old Hammond box.

Yeah! I want more pics! I love the idea of hand-made enclosures.

I made it with my father. Prototype. The next ones will be prettier, once we have the jig made. He does enclosures, I do internals. I'm posting more pics in a bit.

Looks pretty cool Chuck!

The only thing I'll say is you have to be careful of rust with steel. So if I were you I'd clear coat it. Steel, in my experience, tends to rust ridiculous fast for no apparent reason.

Yeah for real. There are some cool gun finishes you could try, though, since it's steel.

We will be clear-coating, for sure, to prevent rust.

My father is a gunsmith, so case-hardening is on the table.
