4 fuzzes in 1 BIG pedal project

Postby Ben79 » Thu Nov 27, 2014 7:16 pm

In January I'm planning to build a big fuzz pedal using this case...

Already pilfered most of the tropical fish, mustard caps and CTS pots from inside.

I'm thinking 4 fuzz circuits each with a footswitch and 3 pots. And out the back, a patch bay with ins and outs for each so the order can be chosen.
I'm also thinking a switch for a Green Ringer on the input (basically an octave switch) and maybe an Orange Squeezer too.

Now I have to decide what to put in there. I've got the parts to build anything - germanium transistors, silicon, diodes etc. I haven't got any chips but I'm not against using them. And I'm not against drilling more holes (especially for switches, i love the simplicity of the digital choice). This is a project that needs to get a bit out of hand I think..... :trippy: :animal:

So I'm looking for ideas...

Could be a boost, a germanium fuzz, a silicon fuzz and an overdrive?

Something with switchable oscillation would be good, never had one of those.

A switchable push-to-make momentary footswitch that engages the whole thing?

A global starve pot?

I don't think I like Muffs (I just hear 90s grunge bands) but I'm not discounting a Muff in there completely.

Internal power supply

Some of my favourite fuzzes are the FY2, Kay Fuzztone, Univox Superfuzz, Ge Fuzzrite....stuff that makes playing the guitar feel like riding a mad goat; pedals that piss in the pool and leave lumps in the custard.

A Jordan Bosstone fuzz clone in there would be a good one, also maybe a Ge Fuzz Face. For overdrive I suggest a Fingerprint.

Always fancied building a Bosstone. I'll check out the Fingerprint.

That's a fantastic case to go nuts with. Going to be a fuzzy beast! :D

Yeah, I bought it on ebay about 5 years ago for about nothing. I wish I had the skills and ingenuity to be a bit more creative than just ramming four distortion circuits in there but I think it could still turn out to be quite a unique beast. And a space-saving one, which is important since next year I will be living out of a van :hobbes:

That enclosure is so sexy. I'm keeping my eyes on this thread, for sure!

Just put together the Tiny Giant board - 20watt SS poweramp. Managed to salvage a load of useful parts from a broken 60s reel to reel I got for free which will go towards putting in 2 valve gain stages. A 12au7 (actually a 5963 which I think is the same?) 'Valvecaster' and a 12fq8 'Valvelitzer'.

So far I'm planning the following other circuits:

Octave up - Green Ringer
Octave down - Octave Multiplexer (just got one cheap off ebay so I'll rehouse it in the enclosure)
Ge Orpheum Fuzz
Ge Fuzz Face
Ibanez Standard Fuzz (Eatyourguitar special version kit)
Wem Si Pep

The objective is to have a load of different fuzz, 2 cascadable valve stages and the power amp all in one floor-based unit that will run off a 18v Li-ion battery and into the 2x10 cab I just built.

I'm not wedded to the Valvelitzer. It's oddball which always attracts me but from the demos I've heard, it's seems pretty grizzly. A second Valvecaster might be better.

On the table - the Orpheum board, a Harmonic Percolator with 3 clipping diode options and a valvecaster on tag board.
