Which resistors and caps

Postby Paddyob » Wed Oct 15, 2014 1:07 pm

I might buy a multi pack of assorted metal film resistors.

I'm just not sure which. There are many on eBay for dirt cheap, but I don't really understand which values I SHOULD have for pedal tweaking. So many values.

I only do Wah WAh right now, so any links or suggestions appreciated.

Thanks

are there any particular projects you plan on tackling? my vote would be to just get 10 of each resistor value that you need and then you'll eventually build up a decent catalog of relevant components. 291-[VALUE]-RC on mouser, 5.4 cents each when ordering 10+

I'm playing with my Wah Wah pedals. Trying different values.

How about brand? I'm not sure if there is any difference.... I've heard thin leads on cheaper ones? Bad?

Nooooob. Yup. That's me.

As cedarskies mentioned, a good option is to buy Xicon brand resistors from Mouser. They get really cheap in larger quantities. At 200, they are about 2 cents each.

There are some values I always use a lot of when designing and building pedals:
100R
470R
4K7
10K
100K
220K
470K
1M

There are a ton of other values I use, but those above I tend to blow through the quickest.

If you're just getting started, the best way to stock your bench with every value you might need is it to bite the bullet and buy a cheap assortment on ebay. I bought one some years ago, and they are decent quality usually. Can't beat the bang-for-buck factor.

For caps, I'd suggest getting box caps from Tayda (if you are keeping things budget-minded). Just grab 10 of most everything to get started. :) Actually grab as many 0.1uf / 100nF caps as you can afford. Those are used in almost every pedal circuit.

I'm not "overly" concerned about budget. I want to ensure what I use is an upgrade to what might be basic.

Thing with mouser, after shipping I'm not sure the order from them is worth it.

I can get 1000 assorted metal film on eBay for $6 shipped. And if they are ok. I'll probably just buy those then.

I'll check mouser again though.

This is what I would recommend. You could easily blow $75 buying the same assortment through Mouser because the quantities on each aren't high enough to make the good price break.

Seriously though, Tayda's box caps seem fine to me. And they are inexpensive compared to other sources. They also have cheap resistors too, but not as many values as the assortments on ebay.

Just a little warning...

Those cheap metal film kits on ebay are, most often, just blue carbon film resistors. Thin leads, too.

Stick one in your meter, apply heat, and watch the value drop. Try it with a metal film resistor from a reputable source, and it is nice and stable.

Holy taydA. Just ordered lots. And lots. And lots.

LEDs are cheap there. Seriously. And after the current 15% off, $12 shipped for everything.

I really hope for your own sake that you didn't waste too much time typing up your shopping list. the presentation looks way more complicated than it needs to be. those tayda part numbers are of no use to anyone but the person who packs the orders at tayda. resistors and caps generally don't have part numbers, only material type and value. for example "carbon comp 10K %5". as for the quantity, no one is going to tell you "hey I know for a fact you need more than 10 of value x" because it really depends on what and how many you build, how much money you set aside for this hobby and how long you want to stay in the game.

Yes. Copy paste. Just showing the values I Took.

I just took 10 of a whole bunch to get a selection. Most I took are values to try in Wah WAh. And others I've seen mentioned In forums here and there.
