TGD Build! Ask yo motherfuckin' questions here!

Post by Jwar »

Hey guys! I figured since there are going to be several of us putting together The Great Destroyer kits, why not have a thread for it in DIY? I literally know nothing about DIY, but wanted to attempt this pedal. So obviously I might have questions, and figured this would be a great place to ask. I have yet to receive mine, but I'm pretty sure it comes with some form of instructions. So as soon as I get it, I'll upload that on here as well as pics of what came with the kit. Let's do this together bros! No but really, hopefully some of you awesome DIY types are willing to answer some of our silly ass questions. Progress and finished product pics should be posted here to! Can't wait! FUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!

NOTE!
You're gonna have to ream out the hole for the standoff in yr PCB. It's like a mm. too small for the standoffs. Or just wrap that fucker in electrical tape when its all soldered up.

So far, i'm having troubles :(

got it all put together, following the layout - and all i get are terrible noises and sputter..and nothing fuzzy.

Here are some pics of the work in progress:

And another couple questions:

Does that look right for the sleeve and tip? and which leg goes into the pcb - positive? :picard:

The process is fun - this is the first IC i've installed - lookin forward to see where i've went wrong haha

*edit* Also wanted to thank Aen and everyone at dwarfcraft for putting these together!

Wait what?!

I'm so ordering this. Never mind that I'm already backlogged on DIY.

Could it have something to do with those long wire leads sticking out of the back of the PCB (the pot wires)?

IIRC, it's better to not leave any part of a component lead that isn't enclosed in solder exposed. Would the same theory apply to the wire leads as well?

The grounding scheme, as drawn in that layout graphic, will only work if you have the jacks attached to the enclosure. Unless I'm just misunderstanding how it is set up.

Yeah, we use the enclosure to ground one of the jacks. I think it's also way easier to build when you install the pots switch and jacks first.

My first ever kit build seemed to be a dud because I forgot to attach the ground to the chassis. I felt stupid and relieved at once when I figured it out -- worked perfectly then.

Yea, it was the ground issue that cj mentioned then. You could have got it working w/o the enclosure, but all grounds would have needed to be connected. The way it's set up, it using the enclosure to form a ground between your metal hardware (in/out jacks for instance). This is done with output jacks a lot, just make sure all your stuff is nice and tight...if it comes loose it'll likely stop working.

A lot of times with that ground scheme, if you paint/finish the chassis, you'll also have to scrape some paint off around jacks so the chassis ground connection will happen properly. A lot of folks just seem to use keys, but something like a wire brush or file probably makes it easier.
