One more documentation: Ryan Driver's xtet (usually a sextet, here a quintet without vibes) is, in my estimation, one of the great Toronto bands.

They play standards, they play them languidly, and yet there's a wonderful soupçon of weirdness around what they do. That's partially down to Martin Arnold's guitar work (he's from the same scene that produced Eric Chenaux.... these folks were rocked to their cores when the possibilities of the Whammy pedal presented themselves) but also just the players' deep mutual sympathy — this group has been around for a good while with a pretty regular membership, so they're generally really in sync with each other. They sometimes play other places, but generally to see 'em, you have to hit The Tranzac on the last Friday of the month for their regular residency night.
