Don't suppose a used blackstar HT5R would be affordable enough? There's the MKII now, so he might be able to find the original version for not much more than a katana :idk:

A decent 5 watt tube amp with a 12" speaker, onboard overdrive and reverb...and a useable volume control, so there's no need to worry about the neighbors or anything. No headphone out though on the old HT5R.

Seems like something a beginner wouldn't outgrown as much as a small solid state amp :idk:
Less of a noob practice rig imo, it's more like a bedroom amp for someone who keeps his Marshall half stack in his studio :idk:
But yeah, not as cheap as a Pathfinder :/

Thanks DR! Few seconds but it sounds really good (both the amp and the pedal actually).
Got to make a choice, at this point, considering the headphones thing the Yamaha seems more suitable for my current needs, but the fact that I could use the Katana also as amp to carry around at jams makes a good point too.
Price wise the Katana 50ii and the Thr10ii are almost identical... decisions, decisions, argh!

I really like the THR for the amp emulation. I think the blackface edge of breakup kind of sound is really good and it interacts well with pedals.
I like the Katana better as a clean platform that's pretty neutral with pedals.
I don't have the new versions of either, I'm using the originals so I can't comment on the updates.

I don't have both but the Katana sounds great with all my pedals. Sometimes I think it doesn't sound so good with dirt (Muff/Rat) but other times it doesn't bother me.

Not terribly helpful, I imagine. :idk:

I'm still using my Yamaha THR10 that I've had since around 2011. Sounds great, and the bass and flat channels are great for synths (and bass too obvs). Crunch channel takes pedals really well.

The only drawback is that there's no stereo input, otherwise it'd be a solid interface as well. I don't know if the new THR10 is stereo? If it is, I might make the leap.

Just ordered a Katana 50 MKII, will share some impressions once it gets here.

Decided to go for this instead of the Yamaha just because i could use it when i want to jam with people and i don't want to take the big head+cab with me.

Anyway if I find out that it doesn't sound right, to my ears, I can return it in 10 days and change it with the Yamaha.

Nice choice, if jamming is an option.
Let us know how you feel when it arrives.

Barely got to spend 45minutes with it, but so far I am impressed. It's the first time i approach this kind of digital amps and I expected it to be a lot more difficult to deal with dirt pedals, especially boosts and things that usually push the valves to saturate. Only negative thing I have found so far I that my IC Muff sounds like shit through it.
Gonna make a proper review once I played it for a decent amount of time, just use it at 50w, still have to try it with headphones and lowered wattage (which is actually why I bought it, but when I grab a new amp I feel the urge to just turn it on and see how loud it can be)

Next you have to use the Gumtown Floorboard editor to load on the sneaky amps: https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index ... ic=20625.0

THR10 bonus - on flat it makes a great amp for synths and drum machines
