DOD Death Metal = Sephora Rouge Status Attained
So in my current rig I’m using two, sometimes three DOD Death Metal pedals (on bass) and nothing is really coming close to matching the unhinged nightmare that these pedals give off. Wondering if there are any comparable effects, either new boutique or preferable some older ones that have fallen out of popular opinion.
Not only is the gain off the friggin’ hook but the EQ section makes them actually quite tweakable in terms of tonal options. Also they will self oscillate if you crank them high enough.
I’ve tried other effects like the DOD Thrash Master, DOD Metal Maniac, Boss Metal Zone and they don’t come close, I will also use an HM-2 at the beginning but more like a boost/OD for the grimey sound I want.
The sound I’m looking for is “feeding a human body into a wood chipper”
Basically these pedals are my favourite but have such a shit build quality I have two being repaired and am always buying replacements and might want something more stable. I’m also having a couple modded to a proper switch which hopefully will increase their life.
FFO: grindcore, noisecore etc

Re: Super ultra high gain distortion like DOD Death Metal
I love this post
I have one that needs repair as well, which I thought about rehousing.
There are a couple boutique type options, but I can only remember LAL Devil Tail off the top.

I will check out - I’m considering a TC Electronics Fangs, fuck maybe a MXR Dimebag Distortion? I’d have to rehouse the Fangs because it looks so stupid. I’d keep the Dimebag even though I’m not a Pantera fan.... I mean something that dumb you’d have to just own it....

They’re always like $20 outside what I’m willing to pay. I probably should just give in. I feel like they won’t deliver the goods in the same horrible way.D.o.S. wrote:I mean have you tried the Digitech version?

They're exactly the same circuit. And now they're cheaper than the DOD

I guess you don't get the same Battery Door cred though.

What's wrong with getting more Death Metal pedals? Just want some variety to throw in the mix? I've also used a DOD Death Metal for grindcore and power violence stuff, works great with a little tweaking. The best thing is you can still get them cheap, especially the Digitech version, so you could always just have someone rehouse one for you and do some upgrades/mods to parts and whatnot.

I’ll keep buying them but I don’t want to limit myself tonally, this is serious business!!!Corey Y wrote:What's wrong with getting more Death Metal pedals?

Well it's a bit out of production at the moment but the dirty doper does harsh and broken better than anything else I've tried.

Re: Super ultra high gain distortion like DOD Death Metal
Stop running from yourself maaaaaan.
Anyway...yeah, maybe try out a used BBE Crusher and/or Blacksmith or a Hardwire TL-2. Those are all high gain distortions with 3 band EQ and they're not very expensive/popular used. EHX Metal Muff, MXR Dime Distortion, MXR Full Bore Metal all might fit those requirements, but...ehhhh.
The Death Metal is certainly more off that weird/gross/cheap/unloved tip. I would also love to find more stuff like that, that isn't expensive or total junk. Looking for rando 80's and 90's junk would probably yield something, but it's pretty unusual to find 3 band EQ on distortions of that era.

Yeah why mess with a good thing I guess.
I’m not imagining a rush of boutique DODDM clones any time soon even after the HM-2 craze.
Maybe this should have been more of an appreciation thread?
I’d love to find some hidden gem one day that’s just as insane, or maybe learn to build clones and add a ring mod circuit like the Gonkulator.....

Re: Super ultra high gain distortion like DOD Death Metal
I bought my DOD DM specifically because the general consensus online was that it was unusable garbage (at the time, I've seen people loving on it here in recent years, obv). I got that for $30 shipped and a Boss ODB-3 for the same, because people said it was the worst bass distortion. A recording project I was in at the time (powerviolence/fastcore type stuff) got asked to do an original track for a comp and I wanted to use only gear everyone said sucked lol.

Re: Super ultra high gain distortion like DOD Death Metal
re-housing seems like your best option imo.
there is minute differences in the digitech version.
but not enough of a difference to really care.
and i am all for this becoming a tribute thread.
also i know it keeps getting said that the Devil Tail is a clone,
but it’s more of a “inspired by” pedal.
it’s also missing the eq section.

Re: Super ultra high gain distortion like DOD Death Metal
TheSyle/Holowon Umiom is the first that comes to mind. They don't pop up that often and the company disappears for years at a time. I keep mine because it emulates just about any gross distortion I could want. Two clipping modes, noise gate, WIDE frequency range on the tone knob and switches. Between that and the Throat Locust I am pretty set, but I have a DOD Gunslinger for simplicity's sake.
Others that come to mind are the MXR Fullbore Metal might be worth a look. the DBA Apocalypse has some solid distortion modes, Mode 3 absolutely slayed when cranked, and mode 4 and 5 were rather Devi Ever inspired to my ears.
One of the most ridiculous tones I have created is a Boss MEtal Zone SCOOPED into a SCOOPED Boss GE-7 Equalizer. Honestly sounded like a chain saw. I wish I could find the video I took of it...
