Muff with it's own personallity

Postby sylnau » Sun Feb 19, 2017 8:09 pm

I never been into muff fuzz... but I kind of want a fuzz with a lot of gain and a lots of lows.
What would be a Muff with lots of gain and lots of lows... but also lot's of presonality (not the usual muff).

I play guitar.

Muff variants with adjustable mids may sound less generic. I agree that the Eau Claire Thunder has tons of personality and bass, though it isn't as high gain as something like the Earthbound Audio Supercollider '71 or Abominable Electronics Hail Satan. The Maxon Fuzz Elements Water may be another viable option.

That's rad they're reissuing the White Elk! Those originals are pretty much impossible to find, and if you do they're outrageously expensive.

Btw don't we get this question every week? Has there been a definitive answer? :D

I dunno... I feel like Muffs have lots of personality. The Muff personality. Looking for something too different usually ends up with another type of fuzz. :idk:

I might sound weird, but most muff I tried sound like distortion.

Doesn't sound weird—I know what you mean. They're really saturated, and very round. Even at the most treble-y settings, they still don't have much snarl.

I have a Wren & Cuff Caprid and Tall Font Russian, which both sound really great. However, they're the fuzzes I reach for the least.

EDIT: I'll also add... have you ever considered something like a Doom Bloom? Not a Muff per se, but I'd say tonally they live in a similar world, but have a lot more controls to tweak.

You know I'm mostly into OEM so I'll suggest some of'm. Jumbo Tonebenders [simplified muff circuit] do their own thing w/massive bass.
They have dynamic input sensitivity like old Fuzztone/Fuzzrites where a light touch can produce AM radio tones, then when you dig in it roars like ze lion...or rather a fire-breathing dragon. Range of the tone knob seems more usable than most Muffs.
They're low-gain as far as Muffs [and Tonebenders] go. Fortunately they love being goosed by Toobskreemuhz or stacking with a boost...probably more than any other in their lineage. They also love loud, dirty amps.

You might also find what you're looking for in a v3, v5 or v6 Muff with Tone Bypass switch :hobbes:
With tonestack bypassed they get LOUD.

Actually, that Doom Bloom might be something to consider.
