Thanks a bunch.

I don't know if you are on Instagram, but that intuitive musician guy you posted is on there if you want to follow him (I am). He is under VOLTAGECTRLR.

Thanks (and you're welcome), I'm un-Instagram-able. I'm subscribed to his YouTube channel though.

Nora:
Have you heard the album Continuum by The Observatory?
Just heard it and thought of this thread. Gamelan-inspired. Lots of tuned percussion.

Never heard them before, thanks. I checked a few songs and I liked it a lot. The only thing I wasn't happy with were the vocals. I would have preferred all instrumental, or even vocals in a language I don't speak. Less distracting for me that way. Will listen again for sure though.

I wrote a song for my girlfriend last night who has been home sick all week, poor kid. Even missed the Robyn Hitchcock show.

Got me my pot gongs this week. They sound great. Gonna have a wooden frame/stand thing built to house them like they are supposed to be.

Thanks for the heads up but I'm probably gonna bid on a xylophone tomorrow so I am all set for instruments for the time being.

Those thunder drums are cool, try hitting the spring of one with a thin piece of metal = they sound like lasers or light sabers when you do that.

I used to have a thing called a Zube Tube which sounded a lot like those thunder drums. Fun stuff indeed.

So much great stuff in this thread, Nora! I love what you are doing with your ever-growing collection of percussive instruments.

I have also been making music with singing bowls fed through pedals.

You can actually get some crazy lo-fi reverb effects with a singing bowl paired with one of those cheapo thunder tubes for kids.

I have one rigged up so it hangs over the edge of a desk, with the spring stretched taut vertically, and an sm57 stuck into the tube. I play the bowl with a mallet, and when you bring it into contact with the spring it conducts the vibrations quite well. Lots of cool springy sounds to be found sliding it up and down the spring as you play it. Different tensions on the spring will give more focused or more reverbed-out sounds. Lots of fun, and if you have a mic that will work, it's like $10 for the thunder tube which is crazy cheap for a weird reverb.

Thanks, I am glad you are enjoying my limited appeal, niche crap. :)*

Your process with the thunder tube sounds interesting. Care to share any clips? I was hoping other folks would join in a post stuff in this thread, but that really hasn't happened too much. There are a few folks who said they would share but never did. :poke:

I have a Knas Moisturizer which has exposed springs, so I wonder if that will have any interesting results pressing a singing bowl against it. Will try when I have a chance. I am in the process of moving so things are in a bit of disarray.

I'm all about that niche life :thumb:

I will do a demo clip of the thunder tube.

I've been curious about trying the same thing with a moisturizer. I think you might have to rig it at at 45 degree angle, you want to hit the springs with the side or rim of the bowl
