Boss DS-1 Mods

Postby jrfox92 » Thu Nov 13, 2014 11:01 pm

Hi, has anyone done the mod similar to he which will not be named (JHS)'s Boss DS-1 synth mod? I just bought one recently in a shop because I had shop credit and that was the only thing that wasn't over $100. :whateva: I'm also curious how people do these mods since the box is so small there doesn't appear to be any room for the wires to go anywhere but people have still managed to do so somehow. :idk:

Beavis did a bong mod of it back in the day, that seems to be the most useful one I've seen.

Yeah I saw that. Want to do one of those for myself. I have a non working boss pedal and an old Ibanez 9 series compressor pedal so I might do both.

The tremolo mod is good fun. Just a wire or two and a switch.

I duct taped a wire to the circuit board for the bass boost mod, it also added noise but you won't notice it if you keep playing.

I should actually get a soldering iron b/c I want to mod my DS-1 and NYC Big Muff.

Yeah, I have one but that caused me to basically destroy, fix, and re-destroy my NYC Big Muff which I'm now fixing and adding on a few mods to. :whateva:

How does that work?

Just remember to fix that NYC Muff and test that it works properly before you mod it. Will save troubleshooting time in the long run. If you do it all at once and something is wrong you will have to troubleshoot the repair and also troubleshoot the mods too. That can have you going around in circles. As far as modding the DS-1 I wouldn't have a clue there. Never owned one.

Somehow I managed to (sort of) fix my Big Muff while modding it with little actual troubleshooting; although, the circuit was so messed up that the volume has to be turned all the way up and even then it's more of an overdrive than anything else now.

Huh. Interesting. Would love to try that beastie.

It's the knob-to-gas factor: the relation between GAS and knobs is sigmoidally proportional, hitting the ceiling at "this thing might as well be a computer."

What does the synth mod actually sound like? Along with the tremolo mod, I'm considering picking up a ds1 or two to mess around with.

I bought a whole bunch of switches so I might do the circuit bend soon; apparently JHS took what was apparently a common circuit bend, cut it down to just three switches and charged a whole bunch for people to say "I have a DS-1 modded by JHS." Basically, it costs no more than the cost of switches (and drilling, if you think that's difficult work) to do this but somehow JHS was a genius and got people to pay $95 for a $5 mod which can be expanded to have 5 "different" sounds. :picard:
