Weird issue w/ Zvex Mastotron - any ideas on the cause?

Postby circuitspore » Sat Oct 06, 2012 12:55 am

*Mods, if this is the wrong section, my apologies.*

I bought a Mastotron off a guy on TGP. Seemed to work just fine a few days ago when I tested it out, but tonight it started cutting out on me. I tried the pedal w/ wall wart and battery power, didn't make a difference. After taking the back plate off, I realized that if I tilt the pedal a certain way, that's what makes the sound cut out. I lightly prodded the wires and tapped on the pots, and couldn't replicate the issue. I had to rotate the pedal to get it to cut in/out. Also, it's not the cables. Tried multiple cables and the behavior is the same.

Any idea what could be going on here? I'm handy with a soldering iron and I'd rather take a stab at fixing something instead of having to send it back to the seller.

Here's a video I took that illustrates the issue:

Your power supply??? The way it's plugged in???

Velcro it to a board and don't move it around???

Is it a loose solder joint?

I had this problem with a pedal a while back where it would do that at certain angles. Turned out the backplate wasn't insulated and a wire would touch it causing a short. Fixed it by putting some electrical tape on the plate. A bare wire could be touching the side of the enclosure when you tilt it?

So I figured out what the issue was - the 'tip' lug on the input jack was just barely making contact with the plug tip. If the cable was rotated, it would make/lose contact. I bent the lug in and little and presto - fully functioning pedal!

Nice. Glad it was an easy fix.
