Trying this new MIG50 out. Wayyy to loud for the apt so I'm taking it to the studio this weekend.

EDIT: Yes that is a SOVTEK face plate sitting on top of the orange. I know it seems odd but I really don't care for the electro-harmonix text and even though it isn't a true Sovtek (nearly identical but not) I still might swap out the face plate. Dumb?

Dude, not to steal your thunder; but I'm rocking the same amp setup!

I got a Mig-50 reissue about three weeks ago. It's a very simple amp, but for my needs it works perfectly. I'm really digging the clean sound from it with my Jazzmaster. I have been playing a Super Reverb Reissue since Summer 2009, and I have always had problems with putting dirt boxes through it. Too much treble and Bass, right? But playing a Big Muff through the Mig-50 is exactly what I've been after for like, ever. It also takes all my modulation and time based effects just as good as my Fender did. Even my Boss BD-2 sounds ace. I no longer have that fizzy decay with it into this amp. I can actually turn the tone knob past 12 O'clock.

I'm playing mostly into the second channel. The first channel appears to have way too much bass for my liking. Understandable since it's modeled after a Bassman. I also agree on the EHX face plate. Swapping it out would be a good solution.

Besides better reliable parts, how much different is the current reissue from the vintage Sovtek Mig-50?

My thunder!!!

I may need an attenuator, this thing is too loud... loving it so far. Although I have to say, I've been playing an OR50 and OR15 a lot in the last few months and having such a clean sounding amp is throwing me off. Gotta change my pedals around :D

I know that feeling. Pedal arrangement/settings is the thing I don't look forward to when I get new gear.

An attenuator would probably be a great solution to tame the Mig.

Picked this up yesterday super cheap, planning to use it as practice amp and mod platform. Single 12ax7 and 6l6 power tube, it's pretty loud too for an 8" speaker.

Damn I think you both sold me. I'll be running the same setup too. Mig 50 into orange 212.

Yeah I used to run a Mig 50 into an OR212.
You guys are operating correctly.

This may be the next most common ILF amp rig next to a jazz chorus.

Are attenuators safe to use? I've heard mixed opinions of them, that they can mess up your amp. I have recently picked up a Laney LH50 and it's bloody loud for home use so would be interested to hear a bit more about attenuators.

No first hand experience here, but I've read in various places that they're fine for mild use, but not to make your loud amp sound like a quiet amp. That's too much strain on something... IDK what exactly.

I used mine verry rarely, and only at really mild settings. Fried it, not long after I got it. Nearly damaged my amp too, according to my amp tech. Who's btw a huge tube guru, he's not your average diy hack or anything. He told me fixing attenuators was a weekly thing for him, and fixing amps that got fucked up by attenuators too.

They're either risky in some way, or they cost more than a small combo, or they make your precious tube amp sound like ass. Or all the above :idk:
Apparantly nearly all types of tube amps have a way to be modded to sound quieter, in a way that's safer and sounds better than any attentuator. Adding a MV, a pentode/triode switch, etc...Hell, I can even make do using a whatever cleanish od pedal with the gain all the way down, using the vol control as a faux master volume.

Don't qoute me on any of that, I'm just going by what I heard from someone who I trust a lot when it comes to this stuff, plus I've had a terrible first hand experience with a pricey attenuator that wasn't abused in any way :idk:

Mind telling us which one you had that went bad?

Anyone have any experience with the Fryette PS-2 Power Station? As I understand it - it isn't a typical attenuator and is potentially much safer to use. I guess it is considered a "re-amper" (?) and sucks out ALL of the voltage and then uses a poweramp to reproduce the sound faithfully... might be worth a shot for us Mig50ers
