poor man's woolly mammoth?

Postby captions87 » Fri Jan 06, 2012 7:22 pm

I love how the woolly mammoth sounds, pretty much my ideal fuzz tone, very bassy. the problem is the price tag. Can anyone recommend a more affordable take on a mammoth, or a more affordable option that is close to getting the mammoth tone? i used to have a little big muff, but after a while, the fact that I had absolutely no pick attack when it was on kinda annoyed me.
my band is called CAPTIONS.

Mammoth clone? I know Derelict78 just made an awesome one for me, and I know someone just hooked up...Jwar? Check with those dudes, they might be able to point you that way.

I had one from Bukowski, I traded it to Jwar. It is a really great pedal. He said he is listing another one.

Indeed. I've read that people have traced it out and the Mastotron is basically identical to the wooly mammoth, except that it has an added input gain pot, and the subs switch.

I don't know about the circuits - but I have owned both, and the Mastotron is superior in every way for me. Unless you really want to pay a couple hundo more for a nifty paintjob, try the Mastotron. :thumb:

Some folks like the Mammoth way more, apparently. He does use different transistors in each, and that should be the major difference if the impedence knob and switch can be set to "neutral." Worth trying both ways for DIY or cloned.

GC is blowing out the Seymour Duncan Tweak Fuzz for $40 again. Silicon Fuzz Face with a tone switch that goes fat to thin. Might do as close enough in a pinch.

They are pretty cheap to produce. They don't take many parts under the hood

You want this right here. I know the guy, builds a kickass pedal, and cheap as shit. I own one, use one, and a demo will come soon.
