Line6 DL-4 & Reverb pedal or EQD Dispatch Master?

Post by CBA »

Dudes,

I'm not a delay guy and I'm not a reverb guy.

Ok, that's out of the way.

Anyway... if you already owned a Line6 DL-4 that you rarely used, and wanted to do some vocals recording with some echo and a bit of reverb, I'm talking straight-to-tape/disk recording, would you quite possibly dump the DL-4 for an EQD Dispatch Master (reverb and delay box), or keep the DL-4 around and get a separate reverb pedal?

I've had the DL-4 for about a decade, and rarely bring it out anymore. Used to use it a lot for looping, but I don't write like that now-a-daze. Never use it with my guitar for live stuff/not on my pedalboard. I'm a minimal gentleman, so the EQD Dispatch Master caught my eye.

And remember, this will be pretty much totally for vocal stuff... only used on guitar for jagging off / fun time.

Would you get the DM or keep the DL-4 and pick up a straight reverb pedal?

Well I can only speak about the Dispatch Master but it is truly awesome.
Almost two seconds of delay time and a really lush reverb in a small footprint? Hell yes!
I haven't tried it with vocals but even on bass it sounds great without getting too muddy.
There's no modulation, per se, but the repeats along with the reverb are very warm and soothing...perfect for ambient music.
The only gripe I have is that there are so few controls, but you really can't complain with such a great sound.

+1

For me the DM nails what I wanted out of a delay and I have had almost no delay gas since then.

That and I would say yes too any ILF pedal over any other.

I think the opposite (too many controls) might be one of my gripes with the DL-4! What would you say the DM lacks for you, then?

Well, I was kind of thinking along the lines of a Dr. Sci Reverberator if I were to keep the DL-4 and get the aforementioned lone reverb pedal.

The DM seems to be one of the most highly-praised pedals in such a short amount of time. Really I'd only like a bit of slapback echo with a touch of reverb... nothing too ambient at all.

Feature wise, go with DL4 and verb. Tone/Simplicity wise, go DM.

Yea, I'd agree with hazelwould. For it's compact size, the DM seems to pack a pretty wide variety of tones. Many settings/sounds from the DM lean towards "ambient" which could work out well with vocals although I've never utilized it that way.

For such a small pedal with relatively few knobs, the Dispatch Master seems to do quite a lot. Sounds really good, too, especially from this here demo:

Dig it.
