What's That Sound? Lo To Hi Fidelity Phaser?

Post by CBA »

Broods-

I was watching this Malekko Omicron Phaser clip:

The phaser sounds great, etc... but then listen to the music at the end (4:35) as Andy is speaking (you can also hear it for a few seconds at about 1:16 when it kicks in there, too). That can't be the Malekko Phaser, is it? It's like a phaser, but it seems to be phasing from like high fidelity to lo fidelity or something... or is that how the Bit or something would sound if it was phased? Does that kind of effect actually exist? I've never heard anything like it! Saw that 7#9 posted a comment on the video a few months ago... do you know, dude?

Tell me tell me tell me!

are you sure it isn't just phaser with distortion, sweeping the frequencies that the distortion produces, giving that kinda jett-y, metallic SKKKRSSSHH sound? :?:

I'm not exactly sure what the "stages" in phasing mean, but it seems like the phaser is still, uh, phasing, or sweeping, but the range is very limited, like it can only go like down to the very bottom and just slightly up a little bit, making it sound more 8-bit or computery or lo-fi or something.

Are there any phasers that can actually do this? Limit the sweep, yet still sweep? I wanted to just get a basic phaser with one knob (and maybe a switch, like the Small Stone), but I see that there are a billion boutique phasers with a billion knobs, so there's got to be one that can do what I'm describing.

Let's say (forgetting whatever "stages" are for a second) you've got a sweep of 1 through 10, 1 being the lowest, 10 being the highest. Are there phasers that you can set that will only go back and forth between 1 and, say, 3, yet you can still adjust the speed? That's what it sounds like is going on in the video.

Thanks!

i have the Electro Harmonix Stereo Polyphase and i can manually set start end stop frequencies -> i can manually set the range :-) the sweep can be so broad that's almost annoying, or VERY narrow

yeah, that's what the 'depth' knob does, unfortunately most phasers don't have the 'manual' control that flangers have so you can't sweep between say 0.4 - 0.7 of the sweep or whatever, i.e. you can't pick the centre of the sweep

Well... if most phasers don't have that control, than some must! They use the same tune at the end of the Earthquaker Grand Orbiter and Phase 45 demos.

Aaarrrrggghhh... the fuzz sound in the tune at the end of the above Malekko clip sounds so scrambled. I love it. :snax: It's like it sounds like a phaser, but doesn't. Just sounds really like 4-bit digital lo-fi or something. I DON'T KNOW.

Any other idears?

well I think the Malekko phaser has control over the 'range' of the sweep..not sure about the other two you mentioned...also, the Baby Quasar does, too...I'd seriously consider getting that...if I hadn't already committed my as-of-yet unspent graduation money on something else

StudioShutIn... I like reading your posts because I'm always waiting for you to say "THIS IS THE PEDAL I'M BUYING!" If memory serves, you haven't made a fuzz purchase yet, correct? Yet you have such a vast knowledge of pedals. I admire your discipline.

Anyway, yeah, perhaps the internal trim pot on the Malekko can cause low-frequency phasing like that. I'm not exactly sure what the right term is for the sound I'm after... low frequency? Low fidelity? Low stage? Low sweep? Again, if a phaser can go from 1 to 10 as far as sweep, it sounds like the thing I want is going between like 2 and 4, yet with the same speed as a normal phaser.

I don't know. I'll have another look at the Baby Quasar too. Good size.

Fuck it. I should just get a Small Stone. I know the Nano is true bypass, but does anyone know if the slightly larger "USA" Image
one is true bypass?

Yer pal,

p.s. viewtopic.php?f=149&t=11724

Sounds slightly like the phaser in this dope song, but the one I'm after has more of a digital lo-fi bit sound to it.

At other points in the demo (in some of the other videos I mentioned), you can hear the fuzz sound without the phase/flange. It's a very chunky, crunchy, gated fuzz, like the US Fuzz almost. And yeah, I figure it's not JUST the modulation effect doing it; I'm sure there is a fuzz before or after, but I still think it's a phaser.
