It's tall because we like the look of those enclosures.
The metal prongs are for programing the chip and they don't have to be that tall. We use the same thing in the Wizard and we just cut them.

So this maybe a dumb question: If I was to ramp the speed control using an LFO expression pedal (something like the copilot fx Broadcast). Assuming the LFO of said pedal runs slower than the speed knob, would I be able to crossfade between the clean signal and the pitch shifted signal at a slower rate than the speed knob currently allows? Or would it still be limited by the rate of the speed knob?

It is digital, so the speed is set in the code. The expression is passive so can only replace what the pot is doing normally. Nothing in that equation will override the OG settings.
